The Asus-manufactured Nexus 7 proved to be quite a hit in the 7-inch tablet market, and it certainly goes to prove that Steve Jobs is human as he mistakenly predicted that a 7-inch tablet is DOA; that is, “dead on arrival”. It would have been interesting to see his reaction upon hearing about the smaller iPad mini that treads dangerously close to the 7-inch tablet market, but we are not here to talk about Apple. No sir, the latest word on the street points to Google working with Asustek to develop a second-generation Nexus 7.



It is said that with Google and Asustek working together again on the sequel to the hugely successful Nexus 7, the tablet market might see a combined shipment of 10 million units this year, where it will comprise of both first- and second-generation Nexus 7 tablets.

So far, research has shown that the $249 Nexus 7 model has proven to be the best selling one, and the total number of Nexus 7 shipments will pass the six million unit mark at the end of this month. Chances are pretty high that the second generation Nexus 7 will not alter the price point in any way, maintaining a comfortable level between $199 and $249, although it will obviously come with its fair share of updated and upgraded innards and hardware specifications to keep up with the times.

I am quite sure that both Google and Asus have a mind to ensure that the presence of an updated iPad mini (perhaps with Retina Display) is not going to be a threat to the next generation Nexus 7 model, as we will see a Full HD resolution on this puppy alongside an industrial design that sports a thinner display bezel.

We also ought to find Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board as the operating system of choice to enjoy that buttery smooth experience. Hopefully the upgrades will not be that minimal, so that folks will be forced to take that upgrade plunge instead of waiting for the next generation instead.
